The listing below is for selected activities that required dedicated and sustained effort over a long period of time. These activities are in addition to typical faculty responsibilities ranging from academic meetings to campus wide events.


2018- 2019               Campus wide, Academic Planning Group.

Working with the Vice Chancellor on academic planning and representative members across campus to provide guidance to the Provost regarding UCI strategic initiatives.

2017- 2019                Council on Undergraduate Admissions & Relations with Schools (CUARS).

Make recommendations regarding policies on admissions, enrollments, and outreach activities to the administration and to the Academic Senate, provide faculty coordination for outreach activities, and maintain system wide cooperation in overseeing all matters relating to the admissions of undergraduate students.

2014- 2019               Director, Master of Engineering in Embedded and Cyber-Physical Systems (MECPS)

Together with a core group of faculty affiliated with the Center for Embedded and Cyber Physical Systems (CECS), we proposed and implemented a self-supporting Masters of Engineering program in the area of Embedded and Cyber Physical Systems (MECPS). The interdisciplinary team of faculty spans two schools, School of Engineering and School of Information and Computer Sciences. This degree was the first in the US to focus on both Embedded and Cyber-Physical Systems. Graduates are expected have an integrative knowledge of systems fundamentals that include software, hardware, sensing, and actuation control and hands-on knowledge through practical projects in a targeted application domain. The first cohort of students graduated in Spring 2017. The program was described in a conference publication, and an expanded Journal version of the paper was invited to the ACM Transactions on Embedded Computing Systems (TECS), 2015.

2011 - 2019              International Collaboration

     Initiated and directed several international activities with Universities in China, Taiwan, France, Saudi Arabia  and Korea.

2005- Present           Member of the California Institute for telecommunications and information technology (Cal-IT2)

2005- Present          Member of the Center for Embedded and Cyber-physical Systems (CECS), renamed form Center for Embedded Computer Systems in 2014.

2015                         Community Outreach

One of two founding faculty of the Aspire/Inspire summer internship at UCI with an inaugural run in 2015. The program is a sponsored 2 week summer program specifically offered to minority and disadvantaged high school and first year community college students.

2014                         Institute for Innovation Mentor

Mentored a group of graduate students from the Business School. The team won the "Tech Surge Award" offered by the Institute for Innovation in 2014. One of only four winning teams across UCI. 

2013                         Member of school level committee Investments in Innovation and Excellence (I2E)

Charged with identifying strategic areas of hiring and growth for the School.

2011 - 2012              Faculty Board for Undecided/Undeclared Students, Chair.

The Undergraduate/Undeclared board plays a critical role by connecting first-year students, who have not yet chosen an academic focus, with learning opportunities to foster and support their engagement, success, and the attainment of key learning outcomes.

2009 - 2012              Faculty Board for Undecided/Undeclared Students, Member.

2006 - 2009              Campus-wide Honors Program Committee, Member.

Advise the chief administrator of the Campuswide Honors Program concerning recruitment, admission, graduation and academic advising of students in the program.

2005- 2019          On going services to the department include serving on Ad-hoc committees to prepare department letter for Faculty Merit cases and Adjunct    Professor cases, faculty hiring search committees, mentoring groups in senior design courses, etc.

2008 - 2015              Managed Dept. Tools and Licenses.

Responsible for all license renewal and tool maintenance of major software suites such as Cadence, Mentor Graphics etc. for a period of 7 years.

2005- Present           Ongoing services to the community include  

⦿     Serving on review panels for proposals and awards at national and international agencies such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), University of California campus initiatives, Greek Ministry of Higher Education, Hellman Foundation, among others

⦿        Reviewing curricula and academic programs at International Universities to provide guidance.

⦿        Serving as a reviewer for academic publishers including IEEE, IET, Elsevier, Wiley etc.

⦿        Member of TPC for a number of conferences, some of which are listed below.

⦿        Working with campus entities to promote industry-university partnership via organizations such as UCI applied innovation.

⦿        Promoting campus initiatives via talks at professional meetings and venues.

 

2016-Present            Executive Board Member: NSF SAVI: Institute for Cognitive Networking (iCON).

Multi-University, Multi-Country initiative to promote and sustain cognitive wireless networking related research and education collaborations. A pilot program has been setup between the U.S. and South Africa, with future efforts geared towards expanding to other countries in Africa and beyond.

Role: Provide oversight and guidance to the management of the institute.

2016-2018                GlobalSIP, Anaheim, CA, United States.

Member of the organizing team of GlobalSIP 2018 held in Anaheim, CA in Dec. 2018. GlobalSIP is the flagship conference for the IEEE Signal Processing Society.

Role: Local arrangement chair for the conference.

2018                         NSF Platform for Open Wireless Data-driven Experimental Research (POWDER) community workshop. Powder-RENEW is part of the National Science Foundation's PAWR program.
