The SVX Series of Silicon Tracker VLSI
The SVX Series of Silicon Tracker VLSI
The SVX circuit was the first custom CMOS I.C. developed and used in High Energy Physics and related fields. Notably, it was also the first to include sparse-data scanning technology, in which “hit” channels (those with genuine signals) were identified and only those processed. Sparse scanning saved about two orders of magnitude of time and in the suppression of useless data. It was a revolutionary advance that has since become ubiquitous in the field. A follow-on design, SVX-H, was the first custom radiation hardened I.C. put to such use, and Dr. Kleinfelder also led the early development of the SVX-II program.
For those who have read this far, I’d like to deliver a personal note:
I owe very much to my collaborators from this time and beyond. To name just a few, they include Carl Haber, Robert Ely, David Nygen, and so many others. I appreciate the ways in which all of you have had a positive impact on my life and my ability to make a few modest contributions. Thank you.
